The John Cheetham Memorial Library served the needs of the Village of Ashland From 1938-1988. At that time the library was expanded to meet the growing demands of the patrons. Through grant money and referendums a library district was established. This district now includes the Ashland portion of A-C Central C.U.S.D.#262 and the Pleasant Plains C.U.S.D.#8. The district is located in portions of four counties: Cass, Menard, Morgan and Sangamon. A construction grant for handicapped accessibility along with the donation of the old State Bank of Ashland building allowed the library to move to 125 W. Editor in Ashland. A branch was established in 1991 in the Community Building at Pleasant Plains. In the year 1999 a large donation from a patron "Boots" Waneta Hartley allowed the purchase of some land in Pleasant Plains. We were awarded in 2000 a 50/50 construction grant from the Illinois State Library for the building of a permanent branch in Pleasant Plains at 555 Buckeye Rd in the Forest View Subdivision in Pleasant Plains in the year 2001.

On Sept 2006 the name was changed to Prairie Skies Public Library District. This name was submited by the A-C Central 3rd Grade Class.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Prairie Skies Public Library District is to serve the public by acquiring and providing a balanced collection of recreational, informational, and educational materials and services. The library will provide life-long learning opportunities, access to materials and services beyond the libraries collections, use of current and emerging technologies to adapt to the needs of the community, and increase public awareness and support for the library.

Anyone in our Library District can get a card or renew their existing cards at either location. We also honor library cards from other libraries.

All items are checked out for 2 weeks and can be renewed by phone. (Coming soon online renewals!) Our items may be returned at 4 convenient locations 24 hours a day, at our drop boxes located outside our building at Ashland, the Plains branch, also off Farmingdale road outside the north entrance of the grade school, or the drop box outside the Gardner Township Hall on Bradfordton Road.
